Salesforce disrupted the way IT projects are implemented and reduced the dependency on the IT team, while increasing the “listening time” with business and predictability to align with the business objectives.

In the 60’s, IT demanded a DB expert, DBMS expert and compatible UI Technology, which in turn called for as many compliers, SDK tools, etc., to complete a project, that often turned out to be a nightmare for project managers to mitigate the risks involved. Some of these issues were addressed with the relational DBMS model proposed by Edgar F. Codd in 1969.

The 70’s showed further improvements on Data storage and retrieval procedures using languages such as SQL. The 90’s brought in object-oriented programming, which simplified the world through the creation of objects that mirrored a more real life scenario, allowing a programmer to abstract and reuse something that has already been created.

However, it was still demanded that the software had to be customized from scratch for most scenarios. In addition to this, User Experience always took a back seat as UI technologies hadn’t yet evolved. This complexity of building such a UI layer was compounded by data being stored in disparate systems, which did not enable business to have systems that gave a true 360-degree view of customer information. Yet, an increasingly competitive market demanded an Enterprise to put customers at the center of everything.
Organizations were seeking an Enterprise Software eco-system that was user friendly and would fit right in for any business. In effect, a platform that has the ability of defining relational objects/tables and fields/columns with a powerful configurable UI. It is into this world that Marc Benioff founded Salesforce.com in 1999 with the idea of making software easy to use and easy to buy. With that they pioneered a new technology model with Enterprise Cloud Computing and a new business model with a pay-per-use commercial offering.
Salesforce started building a killer CRM product by listening to the market for best practices in Sales & Service processes. This was built on a robust platform which enabled a user to click more than code.
Since the platform is made configurable with the ability to override using coding, it also opened up gates for any business to automate a business process in quick succession.
This is how Salesforce disrupted the way IT projects are implemented and changed the conversations from IT to Business. Based on this evolving context, it is safe to assume that the future of the Salesforce ecosystem doesn’t require any coding effort as it would be made available for any business user to orchestrate the flow of data and pick and choose automations to be executed in their system.
Over the years Salesforce was continuously and rightfully voted as the most innovative company in the world for five years in a row.
